I then went out 1/2 mile off north tower and anchored w/single anchor-no
wind. After over an hour w/o a hit, action picked up and so did the weather-ice,rain
and snow. I had almost an inch of snow and ice inside the boat! But the
action also picked up,with multiple hookups, with nothing big. Totalled
18 lakers,the largest being 24".

Comments: Dead calm water, tried live bait drifting outside launch cove
at 1st dropoff where I marked fish, but to no avail. Then I went out to
deeper water midway between north and south towers in 100' of water starting
on some structure, but the drift was nonexistant. I had 1 hit,I gave line
but did not get a hook up. I then went out to 125' depth and got nothing
again. I figured maybe trolling wire would possibly get attraction but
still nothing. First time since last year the fish beat me! NEXT TIME......

Comments: I fished with my 12 year old son ,Kevin, who hasn't been out
since I froze him in January. In January and February, the lakers hit soon
as I hit bottom with the live bait, but this day they were a little reluctant
to hit until we started to chum with cut up frozen shiners. The wind blew
steady from the northwest all day, making presentation a bit difficult
when keeping the rods in the rodholders due to the rocking of the boat.
The fish caught ranged from 18-23",and all gave a strong urge to stay down.
We lost the first 4 hits, even giving line out and being patient!(which
is hard for a 12 year old to be!) 9 fish were caught double anchored in
99' of water, and the 10th caught in 45' of water inside the launch cove
,back trolling against the wind to slow presentation of the live bait.

Comments: Our first time trolling for lake trout with a downrigger
at Round Valley. A great day nice and calm. Saw no fish in the north trench.
All fish were in the south trench. We caught our first laker and didn't
know it. I set the release too tight. I saw the rod release the set but
didn't feel a fish only the ball. After about five minutes my brother Bob
cranked up the ball and was startled when the Laker showed up with the
ball. It was 19 inches but seemed thin, no weight to it and was fine when
released. Any tips on how to set the release.
