Comments: I went to the Newark Watershed office to get my permit for this year and the bad news is they are not issuing boating permits due to the low water levels, only shoreline fishing permits. This includes all of the Newark reservoirs - Canistear, Clinton, Oak Ridge, and Echo Lake. They will issue the boating permits when the water levels rise.

Comments: Started trolling at 6:30am and before I had second rod down , the first rod was bouncing with a 5.5 lb laker boated right away.  Then about 10 min later a rod popped out of the clip and 1/2 hour later an 18.5lb 38.5 inch Laker was in the net.  Thanks to two friendly anglers nearby, I borrowed their scale, took some pictures and released the fish.  8 more lakers out of the 20-24 inch mold and I called it a great day at the valley,,,especially in Feb , what a great winter its been.!!! For a minute or two I thought I was going to give Walt a run for the money.

Comments: Was planning on using live shiners plus lures, but bait store was out of shiners so i used mealworm/powerbait combo for first time.  First 4 hours along with many other guys, not one single nibble at all.  I was getting very discouraged because both the bait and lures werent working.  Then at about 12:30 i had a nice hit on one of my two bait rods which totally caught me and everyone else off guard since there no one at all had any action the whole morning.  I landed a 15" kamloop.  Then about 30 mins later on my other bait rod i had another strike and brought in a 16" FAT kamloop.   The rest of the afternoon saw no more strikes for me or anyone of the other 6 or so anglers on the shore.  I was very lucky to have had those two hits.  All fish were released.  Talked to some very cool guys that shared some valuable fishing information with me.  Now I wont feel so bad if I cant get my hands on any live shiners.  The next day I took the afternoon off and went back and I  fished from 1-4 and had no hits at all using same bait and lures.  Remember not to litter on the shoreline!!

Comments: Caught one 19" Laker on lead core with the J-11 Jointed Fire Tiger on the North side near the Deep "V". Got the 15&1/2" Rainbow (not a Kamloop) in the No. East corner on the D/R. Twenty five feet down over 40'. It took a chartreuse jointed J-7. Both released.
The State Police did a inspection of my boat at the ramp upon my return. They found my boat reg. numbers were not right in that there was not a sufficent gap between the numbers and the letters and my throwable device was not supposed to be in a compartment. I received a warning.

Comments: Dead calm in am, started drifting in launch cove in 40-50' water. Had first laker in 15 minutes of fishing, 21". My son was looking for a trout dinner and I figured that larger were yet to come, so it was released to grow larger. Second drift in the cove produced another laker, slightly smaller. Both fish were hooked in the corner of the mouth using black #4 circle hooks, this being the first time in a year using circle hooks, since all other times the fish were gut hooked using them. Fish stopped biting and we moved off the North Point, using GPS #s from the previous week, picking up only 1 more laker, smaller still. Wind started to kick up so we moved to a more sheltered area off the south tower in 96' water, anchored, and caught the last of our 4 fish, with only 1 laker close to the 20" minimum, which we released. Sorry to my son for not taking the first fish of the day for dinner, but he enjoyed my steak anyway!!!!

About 8:30 I picked up nice sized laker. Final measurements were 35" 16 lbs.11oz.....not a bad day as for that one. The Lorance was packed with fish but fishing was slow.
